BERKELEY - Jonathan Gilling hugged Jermaine Marshall down at the far baseline. The two were celebrating Arizona State teammate Jahii Carson's impending free throws late in overtime of Thursday night's 89-78 win at California. It would be fair to call it a hug of sweet relief. The Sun Devils could have rued the night at Haas Pavilion. Arizona State led the game for all but 15 seconds of the first half and all but 27 seconds of the second half, yet poor shooting and execution in the late going led to having to sweat out an overtime victory.
