There's no Black Monday for GMs in baseball ... but maybe next year

The NFL end-of-season chopping block has become so predictable that it has a name, Black Monday, a day that came and went this week with the standard bloodshed. Five head coaches were fired, two fewer than on the same day last year. We mention this in a baseball column because of how different the sports seem to be when evaluating the highest-ranking decision makers. While football is a coach's game, baseball is more about the general manager, and yet GMs seem to enjoy far more security -- and those jobs seem to be getting more secure every year.

Fiesta Bowl pits 2 1st-time BCS teams

Baylor coach Art Briles was polite enough not to mention Arizona State specifically Tuesday when discussing upsets this bowl season and what his heavily favored Bears must do to avoid joining that list at Wednesday 43rd Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. "We're never going to feel like we're the top dog," Briles said. "When you start walking around wondering who is looking at you is when you walk into a pole."

Tevin Reese, Antwan Goodley part of a Baylor tradition

In high school, Tevin Reese was a 140-pound tight end. He couldn't run a precise route to save his life. When he committed to Baylor as a wide receiver in 2010, the chip on his shoulder probably outweighed him. "I wouldn't say a chip," said Reese, now a 170-pound senior. "I would say a truckload of chips."

Games like Friday's blowout loss at Golden State, which admittedly had been shocked by the Suns 12 days earlier, show that nobody might be taking the Suns lightly any longer.

Phoenix Coyotes try to move on following tough trip

The three-day Christmas break certainly didn't interrupt any positive momentum for the Coyotes. After amassing only four points out of a possible eight on a four-game road trip that ended Monday with a 2-1 overtime loss to the Buffalo Sabres -- owners of the league's lowest point total -- the hiatus probably couldn't have come at a better time.

Phoenix Coyotes fall to Buffalo Sabres on bizarre overtime goal

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Ryan Miller made 36 saves and Mark Pysyk scored an unusual goal at 3:47 of overtime to lift the short-handed Buffalo Sabres to a 2-1 win over the Coyotes on Monday night. Pysyk, a call-up from Buffalo's AHL affiliate in Rochester, scored when his deflected shot hit Martin Hanzal and became lodged in the back Mike Smith's jersey. The goalie retreated into his crease, unwittingly carrying the puck across the line and ending the game.

Arizona Cardinals conquer demons, spoil Seattle home cooking

SEATTLE -- Bruce Arians was laughing as he ran off the field. It was a deep, hearty laugh that spoke of intense satisfaction. And before he disappeared up the tunnel, he stopped to shake the hand of a Seahawks fan in the first row, the one holding a sign that read: "At least you ladies tried today."

And when he was, he was called for offensive pass interference for shoving Seattle cornerback Richard Sherman and hauling in a touchdown pass that would be brought back.

Miles Plumlee keeps Phoenix Suns in the board game

Much of the emphasis for coaxing good rebounding is targeted at heart and desire. Some brawn and hops do not hurt, either. Suns center Miles Plumlee, basically a rookie after barely touching the court for Indiana, is the Suns' saving grace on the boards.
