Blazing a trail: PIR zooms into 50th season of racing

Before the Diamondbacks, before the Coyotes, before the Cardinals, even before the Suns became Arizona's first major-league professional sports franchise, there was big-league motorsports at Phoenix International Raceway. American racing icon A.J. Foyt won the debut race, for Indy cars, on the 1-mile oval on March 22, 1964. That was more than four years before Dick Van Arsdale scored the Suns' first points. Sunday, PIR's 50th anniversary celebration officially begins with NASCAR's The Profit on CNBC 500.
