Earlier this spring, Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said he had two of his nine lineup spots settled: First baseman Paul Goldschmidt would bat third, and the pitcher would bat ninth. And while the presumption is that the team acquired slugger Mark Trumbo from the Los Angeles Angels in order to give Goldschmidt lineup protection, that may not necessarily be the case.
