SPOTLIGHT GAME: Chandler Basha kicker Cade Thompson kicked a 26-yard field goal with 19 seconds left, lifting his team to a 43-42 Division I first-round victory at No.7 Phoenix Horizon (8-3). Running back Rajhan Meriweather scored four first-half touchdowns and quarterback Zach Werlinger threw a 17-yard scoring pass to Ryan Robertson in the final quarter that gave Basha a 40-35 lead. Horizon, which led 35-34 at the half thanks to a blocked PAT, scored its only touchdown of the second half with 5:43 left, when Luke Quinn bounced off a tackler and ran 32 yards into the end zone. Instead of going for two to make it a three-point game, Horizon chose to tack on the PAT for a 42-40 lead. After Werlinger was intercepted deep in Horizon territory and over-threw a receiver on fourth down the next time, the senior drove Basha from its 24 to the Horizon 8, setting up the winning field goal. QB Dalton Sneed threw three, first-half touchdown passes for Horizon. WHAT WE LEARNED: That those great regular-season records that Phoenix Sunnyslope and Avondale Westview built aren't going to do any good in the playoffs if the schedule was mostly filled with soft opponents. Glendale Deer Valley had no trouble giving Sunnyslope its first loss of the season in a 40-16 Division II, first-round rout. Phoenix Brophy Prep improved to 5-6 after giving Avondale Westview its first loss, 28-14, in the first round of the Div.I playoffs. Brophy played the likes of Chandler Hamilton, Phoenix Mountain Pointe, Peoria Centennial, Mesa Red Mountain and Scottsdale Chaparral to toughen up for the playoffs.
