For the first time this season Phoenix Mountain Pointe trailed in a game. It fumbled away the only play it ran in the first quarter. But the defense never faltered, and the top-ranked team in Division I showed its grit and dominance in the second half, shutting down vaunted running back Taren Morrison and pulling away from Mesa Desert Ridge for a 27-9 state semifinal victory Monday night at Tempe McClintock High.
