At the time, it was hard to imagine the Diamondbacks making a more significant move in 2013 than when they dealt Justin Upton to the Atlanta Braves in January. Turns out, they did something a couple of months later that might be just as substantial. At the end of March, just before the start of the regular season, the Diamondbacks gave first baseman Paul Goldschmidt a five-year, $32 million extension, a deal that did not kick in until 2014 and also includes a $14.5 million team option for 2019, meaning the club could buy out two years of free agency.
