Desert Vista routs Westview for Division I high school girls basketball title

Fifth-seeded Phoenix Desert Vista defeated No. 6 Avondale Westview 53-37 Saturday in the Division I championship at Jobing.com Arena in Glendale, claiming the first girls basketball title in program history. After a shaky start, Desert Vista (30-2), led by the trio of Emily Wolph, Sabrina Haines and Kristine Anigwe, clearly distinguished itself as the better team, putting the game away by the end of the third quarter. Westview (26-7) had control early on, jumping out to an 11-4 lead after the first quarter and putting Desert Vista on its heels. But Desert Vista responded, finding the 6-foot-4 Anigwe inside for several easy layups. Anigwe had nine points in the second quarter as Desert Vista took a 23-19 lead into halftime. Desert Vista then outscored Westview 20-3 in the third quarter to go up 43-22.

Seton Catholic defeats Cienega to win Division II girls basketball title

After the first half of Saturday's Division II state championship, Chandler Seton Catholic trailed Vail Cienega 16-14. Tellingly, Seton Catholic also was getting outrebounded 20-13. Coach Karen Self knew that had to change. Her halftime speech reflected it, and so did top-seeded Seton Catholic's play in the second half, as it overwhelmed No. 3 Cienega to win 37-30 at Jobing.com Arena in Glendale.

Shadow Mountain routs Flagstaff for Division II boys basketball title

Sophomore point guard Michael Bibby hit seven 3-pointers and scored 27 points, leading Phoenix Shadow Mountain to its first state championship in 14 years with a 83-58 rout of Flagstaff on Saturday in the Division II final at Jobing.com Arena. Bibby joined his father Mike in the post-game celebration.
