Baylor's defense collapses in Fiesta Bowl loss to Central Florida

There were no worries about Baylor's offense entering Wednesday's game against Central Florida in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. Leading the country in points and yards per game, the Bears knew they would have little trouble moving the ball down the field and into the end zone. Turns out, a little more attention should've been paid to the other side of the ball.

Central Florida quarterback Blake Bortles shines on national stage

The chant started the moment Blake Bortles stepped onto the podium. "One more year, one more year," Central Florida's fans shouted at their beloved quarterback, and Bortles responded with a wide smile.

Phoenix Suns' Alex Len excited to practice again

Suns rookie center Alex Len got the best jump of anyone Wednesday on a happier and healthier new year. For the first time since a brief, failed November comeback, Len practiced with the Suns on the first day of 2014 and felt no discomfort in the left ankle that had limited him since the start of the season.

Pac-12 looks good as conference play opens

It's hard to imagine a better Pac-12 non-conference season. Seven undefeated teams remain in college basketball -- two are from the Pac-12. Arizona is the top-ranked team in the country, a national-title contender. Oregon is the nation's highest-scoring team. Signature wins? The conference has some. Arizona defeated Duke. Colorado, unforgettably, knocked off Kansas. And Stanford, forever under-achieving, produced perhaps the biggest win of the Johnny Dawkins era, beating Connecticut on the road.

ASU basketball still a Pac-12 enigma

Throughout a beefed-up non-conference schedule, Arizona State saw point guard Jahii Carson overwhelm UNLV with 40 points and rip apart Texas Tech with 13 assists. The Sun Devils saw Jordan Bachynski, inconsistent in the past, develop toughness on the boards, making him more than just a shot blocker. They saw the scoring value of transfer guard Jermaine Marshall, particularly when Carson penetrates and draws a crowd.

So long, BCS; it's time for playoffs

It was a dignified exit for the BCS era. Like the funeral processions of the ancient Romans, Baylor and Central Florida helped deliver the corpse of a frustrating college postseason game plan to a respectable burial Wednesday in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. Knights 52, Bears 42. Way to go, gentlemen.

Ex-QB Jeff Godfrey glad he stayed at Central Florida

With Central Florida playing in its first-ever BCS bowl game Wednesday, Knights wide receiver Jeff Godfrey is glad he decided not to transfer two seasons ago. But the prospect of BCS success isn't what drew him back to UCF. He began his college career as a quarterback, leading the Knights to 10 victories as a freshman in 2010. But he struggled in 2011, sharing time with current signal caller Blake Bortles, as UCF finished a disappointing 5-7.
