Arizona Diamondbacks bring back Eric Chavez on 1-year deal

The Diamondbacks retained the veteran bat they wanted for their bench, bringing third baseman Eric Chavez back for 2014 on a one-year deal. Terms of the deal are not yet known. The agreement was first reported by CBS Sports' Jon Heyman. Chavez, who turned 36 earlier this month, made $3 million last season.

MLB average salary up 5.4 percent to $3.39 million

NEW YORK (AP) -- While the New York Yankees set another salary record, the Houston Astros had the lowest average in the major leagues in 14 years and the attention of the players' union.The overall big league average rose 5.4 percent this season to a record $3.39 million, according to the annual report released Wednesday by the Major League Baseball Players Association. The increase was the steepest since 2006.
