Ish Smith needed for spark for Phoenix Suns with Goran Dragic out

Chandler Basha tops Phoenix Horizon with late field goal

A sack near the end of the first half moved Chandler Basha just far enough for Cade Thompson to see his 42-yard field-goal try bounce off the crossbar as time expired. This time, quarterback Zach Werlinger moved his team in the final 2:24 from his 24 to the Phoenix Horizon 8, giving Thompson a chip-shot, 26-yard field goal to win it.

Arizona basketball overcomes slow start to beat Cal Poly

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Aaron Gordon scored 13 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked four shots in his collegiate debut for No. 6 Arizona and the Wildcats opened their season with a 73-62 victory over pesky Cal Poly on Friday night. Arizona took the lead for good with just under 11 minutes left in the first half but the Mustangs, who beat UCLA last season, stayed close until the final minutes.

GCU men's basketball edged by Loyola Marymount in season opener

SAN DIEGO -- Anthony Ireland's strong finish powered Loyola Marymount to the 78-75 win over Grand Canyon Friday night. Ireland, who re-entered the game with 4 minutes to play after sitting due to foul trouble, scored six points and had one assist as the Toreros (1-0) outlasted the Antelopes (0-1) down the stretch. Ireland's assist came when he found Chase Flint for a 3-pointer that gave LMU the 75-73 with 1:03 left to play.

Markieff Morris leads the Phoenix Suns past the Denver Nuggets

PHOENIX -- Twin brothers Markieff and Marcus Morris made the big shots that helped the Suns rally from an 11-point deficit late in the third quarter to beat the Denver Nuggets 114-103 Friday night. Markieff Morris scored 14 of his career-high 28 points in the fourth period. Marcus Morris sank a jumper with 5:13 left that gave the Suns a 100-95 lead after a back-and-forth first part of the quarter.

Phoenix Coyotes aim to start another streak

Needing to rebound from losses hasn't been regular protocol for the Coyotes this season, an early indicator that this team is in better shape than the previous one that missed out on the playoffs. "When you don't win, you look at why didn't you win, what gives you a better chance to win next time," coach Dave Tippett said.
